As Heimdall Power continues to grow and scale internationally, strengthening our leadership team is key to developing the next generation of solutions that help utilities operate their grids more efficiently.
This spring, we were very excited to announce Brian Berry as our new Chief Product Officer, a newly created role on Heimdall’s executive team. Now, two weeks into his new position, we sat down with Brian to hear his first thoughts and impressions, and learn more about his vision for the road ahead for both Heimdall Power and the industry.
"Getting started here has been great, and my immediate impression was that I felt really energized by the passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm of the team here,” says Brian.
That feeling has only deepened throughout the first couple of weeks.
“The team has been incredibly welcoming, and the energy here really is contagious," said Brian. "You look around and everyone truly believes they can change the world, and that belief makes you want to be part of it. Being able to come in and be a direct contributor from day one has been awesome.”
“You look around and everyone truly believes they can change the world, and that belief makes you want to be part of it.”
Before joining the company, Brian had already established a good impression of Heimdall Power from his time in the industry:
“What impressed me most from the outside was how quickly the company moves and how boldly it challenges the status quo. The Heimdall Power team has really been asking all the right questions in the past years: What are the bottlenecks for deployment? How do we overcome them? Drone-based installation is one answer. Making sensors affordable is another.
Beyond DLR, there are also many exciting opportunities, from software to new value streams in the energy market. With the great group and products we have here already, I see almost endless potential in this company.”
Unlocking that potential means balancing cutting-edge innovation with the reliability utilities demand. For Brian, the key is taking the right steps at the right time:
“You can’t try to solve everything at once. I think progressive steps that build into a full solution are the best path, and many utilities are ready to support that approach. The real challenge is knowing where to take giant leaps and where to move carefully.”
So, where will the industry head from here? For Brian, it’s all about focusing on real customer challenges.
“If you build a brilliant solution that doesn’t actually solve a problem, it’ll just sit on a shelf. Transmission system operators (TSOs) and DSOs often face similar issues, but their scale is different. Transmission system operators can use more data and resources to improve their EMS, but DSOs are now forced to juggle multiple challenges at once: Renewable, EV charging, replacing gas heating, and integrating smart meter data. Each of these tasks is complex on their own, but together it’s overwhelming. Within distribution, there’s no shortage of problems to solve, and that’s where I think Heimdall can really help accelerate the grid of the future.”
Speaking of the power grid of the future, Brian is, perhaps not surprisingly, convinced that smarter grid utilization will be essential going forward.
“The demand for grid capacity is expanding at an unprecedented pace, but the number of transmission lines isn’t. Building new lines takes longer today, for good reasons like safety and regulation. But if we only follow traditional approaches, costs end up with consumers through taxes or electricity rates. The alternative is smarter use of what we already have. By better managing existing infrastructure, we can minimize costs while accelerating the energy transition. That’s why I’m so excited to be here, because Heimdall Power has the technology to break down barriers and unlock that potential.”
